2014 Year End Charts

The #1 album on the Billboard charts for all of 2014 is The Soundtrack to the movie Frozen featuring Idina Menzel.

There were some strong showings from the Miss American Idol finalists on the 2014 year end charts. The Season 1 Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson has the highest ranking at #17 with her holiday album Wrapped in Red. The Season 5 Miss American Idol third runner up, Chris Daughtry comes in at #86 with his album Baptized. The Season 10 Miss American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, comes in at #170 with his album See You Tonight. The Sound of Music: Music from the NBC Television Event featuring songs from the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood, finishes out the year at #197.

The Top 5 singles for 2014 on the Billboard HOT 100 are: #1 Happy by Pharrell Williams, #2 Dark Horse by Katy Perry, #3 All Of Me by John Legend, #4 Fancy by Iggy Azalea and at #5 Counting Stars by OneRepublic.

The Miss American Idol finalist who makes the highest showing on the year end singles chart is also the ONLY Miss American Idol finalist who made the chart. It is no surprise that it is the Supreme Miss American, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood. at #99 with her duet with Miranda Lambert, Somethin' Bad.

The Miss American Idol winners also had a minimal showing on the Billboard 2014 Top Artists of the Year chart:  The Season 1 Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson lands at #97.

The Top 8 - Results

The Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up, Chris Daughtry, may not have won the crown, but he did go on to become one of the best selling finalists in the history of the show. Last year he released his 4th album called Baptized and the single Waiting For Superman has been slowly rising on the charts since then. After performing it on the show tonight it should get a good sales boost.

And speaking of sales boosts - the original song, Fairy Tale, that finalist Alex Preston performed last night is available for download on itunes and it is all the way up at #38!!! The songs by all of the Top 8 are available, but his is the only one that is having such an impressive and significant impact.

This week I am happy to report that I correctly predicted two of the bottom three. Unfortunately, Malaya Watson was in the bottom three along with CJ Harris and Sam Woolf. In his third week in the bottom three, Sam Woolf was finally the lowest vote getter and on his way out. His singing and personality are completely boring bland, but somehow as he was putting us to sleep singing for the judges save they actually decided to use it and bring him back next week!!!!

American Music Awards

The 2013 American Music Awards have come and gone and there were no wins for the American Idol alumni association this year. Neither Carrie Underwood nor Phillip Phillips won their nominations in their respective categories, Favorite Country Female Artist and Favorite New Artist of the year.

The only presence of the American Idols came in the form of presenters. The Season 3 Miss American Idol finalist and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson graced the stage as a presenter. She is currently promoting her new single, I Can't Describe. It's a fun R&B groove that I have been playing in heavy rotation on my playlist, but since it has failed to appear on any charts yet, I could be the only person playing it.

Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd runner up, Chris Daughtry, was also there as a presenter. He is promoting the release of his 4th album, Baptized. The album has just made its debut on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart at #6 with just over 55,000 units sold. This means that all four of his albums have made it to the Top 10 on this chart. His last album, 2011's "Break the Spell," debuted and peaked at No. 8 off a start of 129,000.

2012 Year End Charts

The #1 album on the Billboard charts for all of 2012 is 21 by Adele. This is quite a significant accomplishment as it was also the #1 album for all of 2011.

There were some very strong showings from the Miss American Idol finalists on the 2012 year end charts. The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood comes in at #14 with her album Blown Away. The fifth album by Season 1 Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, Stronger, lands at #24. The Season 10 Miss American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, comes in at #32 with his debut album Clear As Day. Break The Spell from Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up Chris Daughtry is the #53 album of the year. The Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up Adam Lambert ends the year at #188 with his album Trespassing.

The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood had the #5 Country Album of the year with Blown Away. The Season 10 Miss American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, comes in at #8 on this chart with his debut album Clear As Day and the Season 10 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up Lauren Alaina lands at #34 with her debut album Wildflower.

The Top 5 singles for 2012 on the Billboard HOT 100 are: #1 Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye, #2 Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, #3 We Are Young by fun., #4 Payphone by Maroon 5 and at #5 Lights by Ellie Goulding.

Just missing the top 5 is the Miss American Idol finalist who makes the highest showing on the year end singles chart, Season 1 Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson is at #7 with Stronger. Also landing in the top 100 songs of the year is the reigning Miss American Idol, Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips with Home at #49. The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood is on the year end chart with two songs - at #66 with Good Girl and at #70 with Blown Away.

The Miss American Idol winners also had an impressive showing on the Billboard 2012 Top Artists of the Year chart: The Season 1 Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson lands at #16 while The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood comes in at #31. The Season 10 Miss American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, comes in at #93 and the Season 11 Miss American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips ends up at #95.

Finally, coming in at #16 on Billboard's list of the Top Soundtracks of 2012 is Season 3 Miss American Idol finalist and Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson on Think Like A Man while landing at #18 is the Season 5 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Katharine McPhee on the Smash soundtrack.

Adam Lambert is #1

The Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st runner up, Adam Lambert makes a strong debut at the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with his second release, Trespassing. He had first week sales of 77,000 copies sold.

This is a very significant moment in Miss American Idol history as it is the first time that one "American Idol" replaces another at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. His arrival bumps last week's leader, The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away," down to #3.

In addition, with a Miss American Idol ruling the chart for three weeks in a row, it's the longest that "Idol" has monopolized the #1 slot. There have been two-week runs atop the list, but always from a singular album -- like Carrie Underwood just did these past two weeks with "Blown Away."

This is Adam Lambert's first #1 album and is his second major label studio set. It follows 2009's "For Your Entertainment," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 198,000 sold in its first week.

Adam Lambert is the seventh Miss American Idol finalist to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart following Season 1 winner, Kelly Clarkson, Season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, Season 2 1st runner up, Clay Aiken, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, Season 5 3rd runner up, Chris Daughtry, and Season 10 winner, Scotty McCreery.

The Results - Beginnings

There was no group performance to open the show this week. Ryan got started with the results immediately informing us that Phillip, Joshua and Skylar were all safe while Elise was once again at risk of elimination.

Teen star Demi Lovato is continuing to pursue a career as a young adult in the music world. After huge success starring in Disney movies and TV shows like Camp Rock, she came to the American Idol stage to perform her latest dance pop single, Give Your Heart A Break. Demi is way better than Miley Cyrus, but not quite as all-around cute, talented and adorable as Selena Gomez.

Colton, Jessica and Deandre are safe leaving Shannon to join Elise in the bottom three.

The season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner-Up, Chris Daughtry, has had very significant platinum selling success with his first two albums, and this performance tonight should give a nice boost to the lagging sales of his third album. The single Outta My Head has a little more bounce and energy than his usual brand of soft rock, so things could turn around.

Hollie and Heejun are also safe putting Erika in the position of completing the bottom three with Shannon and Elise. But thankfully, after her wonderful performance of Let's Stay Together last night, Elise is also safe.

Erika was then also sent back to safety while Shannon had one last chance to sing for her life in the hopes that the judges would save her from elimination. Unfortunately for her, she completely butchered One Sweet Day the same way she did last night and the judges put us all out of our misery.

So Shannon is out of the competition just as I had predicted. But to go along with that good news is the bad news that we are still stuck with the terrible twosome of mean boys, Phillip and Heejun to be rude, arrogant and condescending for another week.

American Idols at the AMA's

The 2011 American Music Awards have come and gone. This year none of the Miss American Idols walked away with any awards because they weren't even nominated. But that didn't stop many of the Miss American idols from making appearances.

Season 3 Miss American Idol finalist and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson was there looking fabulous to present an award. Also, the Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Adam Lambert was also a presenter. Unlike the last time he was at the American Music Awards, he did not get a chance to sing or kiss a boy live on camera, but he was still full of enthusiam.

The Season 1 Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, did get the chance to perform her latest top 10 hit, Mr. Know It All, with a very fun New Orleans style jazz arrangement. If we are lucky, this remixed version will get released as a single.

Finally, the Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up, Chris Daughtry, performed the first single, Crawling Back To You, from his newly released third album. This high profile appearance helped to propel his album, "Break the Spell" to debut at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with first week sales of 129,000. His previous two releases both hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. In 2007 "Daughtry" had first week sales of 304,000 and in 2009 "Leave This Town" had first week sales of 269,000.

And this week there are two Miss American Idols in the top 10 as the Season 10 Miss American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery moves back up to #10 with sales of 88,000 for his debut album, Clear As Day.

The Results - Lady Gaga

Scotty and James opened the show with a performance of the Brad Paisley and Keith Urban duet, Start A Band. James was able to add a convincing musical interpretation to the lyrics as this is something that he has clearly been striving toward for his entire life, while Scotty was just going through the motions. Lauren and Haley followed this up with their best effort of the Miranda Lambert anthem Gunpowder and Lead. The fact is, though, that clearly neither of these girls has the spit fire composition to live up to the premise of the what little girls are made of in the song.

Lady Gaga performed a live concert on HBO this week and the You and I clip from it was shared with the American Idol audience. It was nice to see this song done well after the mess that Haley made of it a couple of weeks ago.

Lauren was then the first of the remaining finalists to secure a spot in this year's top three.

The Season 6 Miss American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, has enjoyed some wonderful well-deserved success since getting the crown. She has consistently reached the top 10 on the Billboard HOT 100 with singles, No Air, Tattoo and Battlefield. Tonight she made the debut of her latest single, I Am Woman, which is an empowering dance throw down. Hopefully this year's finalists were watching closely and learning a lesson about how a very young and talented singer should look in order to have pop music success. Jordin looked and sounded amazing.

Enrique Iglesias made his way back to the upper portion of the charts last year with his dance club friendly songs like I Like It. Tonight he is hoping to get more success with his release Dirty Dancer.

In an unpleasant twist, it was announced that Haley would be the next person joining Lauren in the top three along with Scotty. That left the most impressive singer with the best vocal range and stage presence, James Durbin, to be the one eliminated this week.

Needless to say, I was not right with my prediction at all this week and Haley is continuing to move another step closer to winning the Season 10 Miss American Idol crown.

It seems like James Durbin is set to follow in the footsteps of Chris Daughtry who was eliminated at this same point during Season 5, but went on to release the top selling album for all of 2007.

2010 Year End Charts

The #1 album on the Billboard charts for all of 2010 is I Dreamed A Dream by Susan Boyle. None of the Miss American Idol finalists managed to get into the top 10 on the year end albums chart, but it's no surprise to see who got closest...Coming in all the way up at #12 is Play On, the hit packed third album from the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood.

Further down at #29 for the year is the fun and energetic debut release by Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Adam Lambert, For Your Entertainment. And still going strong into another year, the second album by Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up Chris Daughtry, Leave This Town, lands at #59. The third album, Back To Me, from the Season 3 Miss American Idol winner, Fantasia, checks in at #105 while the debut from Season 8 Miss American Idol winner, Kris Allen, ends up at #115 for the year.

The Top 5 singles for 2010 on the Billboard HOT 100 are: #1 Tik Tok by Ke$ha, #2 the most spectacular song Need You Now by Lady Antebellum, #3 Hey Soul Sister by Train, #4 California Gurls by Katy Perry and at #5 OMG by Usher.

The Miss American Idol finalist who makes the highest showing on the year end singles chart is the Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up Adam Lambert at #45 with his top 10 smash Whataya Want From Me. Also landing in the top 100 songs of the year is the Season 8 Miss American Idol winner Kris Allen at #48 with Live Like We're Dying and the Season 1 Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson #74 with Already Gone. Carrie Underwood lands at #88 with her crossover hit Undo It and Daughtry manages to squeeze in at #96 with Life After You.

With all of this Miss American Idol success on the albums and singles charts, they also did very well on the Billboard 2010 Top Artists of the Year chart: The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood comes in the highest at #23, Adam Lambert is at #27, Daughtry is at #51, Kris Allen lands at #57 for the year and Kelly Clarkson makes the list at #90.

New music, TV and videos!

The Season 7 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, David Archuleta, released his 2nd full album of music on October 5th called The Other Side of Down. The 1st single, Something 'Bout Love, has been out for a few weeks now but it has failed to generate much sales and airplay even though it is a very fun and catchy dance pop song. It's a shame. Next week we'll see how well he does on the album chart....

On the Billboard HOT 100 singles chart, the Season 8 Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Adam Lambert reaches a new peak position of #30 with his awesome high energy hit If I Had You. Also, The Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up, Chris Daughtry also reaches a new peak position of #40 with his latest single, September.

Just as predicted after seeing her in concert, The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, has filmed the video for her latest single, Mama's Song, and it depicts her real life mother looking through a scrapbook of memories after Carrie's wedding to hockey player Mike Fisher. Let's hope the lyrics to the song ring true and Carrie has really found the man who her mother can be assured is "good and treats your little girl like a real man should".

The 2nd season of the reality show starring the Season 3 Miss American Idol winner, Fantasia, has started on VH1. The good news is that Fantasia has kicked her brothers out of her house and her mother has gotten a place of her own. It's a step in the right direction for Fantasia to start taking better care of herself and her daughter. She's also got to be able to focus on finishing her latest album and getting to promoting it and getting the video filmed. It's a lot of fun seeing all the behind the scenes action leading up to its release.

Finally, it is official that the new judges panel for Season 10 will be Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson. It doesn't really matter who the judges are as long as we get some talented and interesting finalists. Last year's group was so bland and boring the show can only go up from here....

Clay Aiken is BACK!

FIVE Top 10 Albums on the Billboard 200 Chart:

With his latest album "Tried & True" becoming his fifth top 10 on the Billboard 200 with a debut at No. 9 this week, The Season Two Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up Clay Aiken passes The Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson for most top 10s on the tally by an "American Idol" graduate.

The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood ranks third among the Fox TV series' former finalists with three top 10 albums: Some Hearts, Carnival Ride and Play On.

The Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up, Chris Daughtry, Season Five finalist, Kellie Pickler, The Season Six Miss American Idol Winner, Jordin Sparks and the Season Two Miss American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard have all had two top 10 albums on the Billboard 200.

Clay Aiken first appeared on the Billboard 200 with "Measure of a Man," which spent its first two weeks at No. 1 in November 2003. This album still holds the record for the highest one week sales for any Miss American Idol finalist. He revisited the top tier with "Merry Christmas With Love" (No. 4, 2004), "A Thousand Different Ways" (No. 2, 2006) and "On My Way Here" (No. 4, 2008).

The Results - Movie Music

The Season Three Miss American Idol winner, Fantasia, has been working hard to get back on the top of the charts. Most recently she exposed her entire life in the reality show, Fantasia For Real, where we learned that she was financially supporting her entire family. The season wrapped up with the members of her family finally giving her a Thank You for all that she does for them. Tonight she returns to the American Idol stage to perform her new single, Bittersweet. It's a wonderful R&B ballad that should hopefully get a nice American Idol bump on the sales and airplay chart after this high profile performance.

Casey James is the first finalist to make it into the top three.

Chris Daughtry, The Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd runner up, refused to listen to any of the mentors that tried to work with him each week. No matter what the theme of the week was, Chris performed his standard rock song time after time. While the judges loved him, he ended up being a surprise elimination and didn't make it into the top three. When he released his first album, he showed everyone that it doesn't matter if you win or lose as it became the best selling album of the year for all of 2007. He came back to the American Idol stage tonight to sing his latest single.

Lee DeWyze is also safely taking his place in the top three.

One of the best rock bands of all time, Bon Jovi, came to the American Idol stage to sing their latest hit single, Superman Tonight. Bon Jovi has successfully evolved from 80's hair metal band to a top selling classic rock band of today.

Crystal Bowersox gets the last position in the top three leaving Michael Lynche to be sent home. He was saved by the judges and he made good use of it surviving all the way up to the final four!

So there was no surprise elimination tonight as I had predicted. So much for any excitement getting added to this season.....

Another Season of American Idol

We've survived the first two cities of the Season Nine Miss American Idol auditions in Boston and Atlanta. It looks like we may have already seen a couple of contestants who may make it pretty far in the competition this year!

Until the crowning of the Season Nine Miss American Idol winner here's a look at what's going on with the previous group on this week's Billboard charts. There's actually quite a bit happening:

The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood is still going strong on the Top Albums chart with her latest, Play On, hanging in there at #18.

The Season Five Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Katherine McPhee manages to make a ripple on the chart with her album, Unbroken, debuting at #27.

The Season Eight Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Adam Lambert is at #40 with his release For Your Entertainment.

The Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up, Chris Daughtry is hanging in there at #59 with his sophomore album, Leave This Town.

Finally, holding on for dear life at #97 this week is the self-titled debut album from the Season Eight Miss American Idol winner, Kris Allen.

There's also quite a bit of activity on the Billboard HOT 100 Singles chart this week:

After peaking at #13, the Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson is now at #25 with Already Gone, the third single from her album, All I Ever Wanted.

Despite the weak showing of his album, Kris Allen's single, Live Like We're Dying is at #33 this week after peaking at #30.

The lead single, Cowboy Casanova, from Carrie Underwood's album Play On peaked at #11 and it is at #43 this week.

Chris Daughtry is at #56 with his single Life After You.

The title track from Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment pretty much fizzled at radio so he is already working the second single, Whataya Want From Me, which is at #65. In fact, all day today VH1 has been playing the video at the top of every hour, so hopefully that will give it a push.

Carrie Underwood is also already working the second single from her album with Temporary Home making it's debut this week at #89.

The premiere episode of Season Three Miss American Idol winner, Fantasia's reality show on VH1, Fantasia For Real was on this week. We got an inside look at how even after winning, it takes a lot of hard work to stay on top. We learned that at only 25, Fantasia is supporting 6 members of her family - and they aren't all that appreciative of her work. Especially her 28 year old brother who would rather go test drive Ferrari's than get a real job. Fantasia seems to have a pretty smart manager who is working closely with her to get a new album and single released so we'll have to wait and see how successful it turns out to be in the next few weeks....

The People's Choice

The 2010 People's Choice Awards were on tonight and as expected, The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood has added yet another award to her collection. Based on the online voting process Carrie won the award for Favorite Country Artist. She was up against Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift and managed to come out on the top of the heap!

Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up Chris Daughtry was in the category of Favorite Rock Band, but he ended up losing to Paramore. Season Three finalist and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson was in the category of Favorite R&B Artist but she was up against the biggest superstar of all-time, who of course ended up getting the most votes, Mariah Carey.

And in another instance where there was no competition, in the category for Favorite Competition Show it's no surprise at all that American Idol, still the highest rated show on TV, was clearly the People's Choice and the winner.

As we get closer to the start of the ninth season of American Idol we can look forward to meeting an entirely new group of finalists who will hope to someday be the people's choice. We can look forward to Ellen Degeneres joining as a judge and seeing if any of the music will make an impact on the charts this year. And as a matter of fact, the winner of the People's Choice award for Favorite Talk Show was the Ellen Degeneres Show!

Speaking of having high hopes of having chart impact, Season Five Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up Katherine McPhee is releasing a new album today called Unbroken. In her new video for the single Had It All she's almost unrecognizable from the finalist who stood next to Taylor Hicks when he won the crown as she has dyed her hair blond! Will the music buying public know it's even her? Next week we'll be able to see how well it sells to debut on the Billboard albums chart.

Also coming up this Monday January 11th is the premier of something new and completely different from Season Three Miss American Idol winner Fantasia. She will be starring in her own reality show on VH1. I can't wait to see it and see if she can get some more singles or albums back on the charts as a result of this kind of promotion.

A Decade of American Idol!!!

Can you believe in 2010 we will be starting the 9th Season of American Idol? Here we are as 2009 comes to an end we also reach the end of the first decade of the 2000's. Billboard has released their ranking of the top artists, songs and albums of the decade and it's no surprise that many of our favorite Miss American Idols showed up on many of the charts.

The #1 song for the entire decade is the huge smash by Mariah Carey that spent 14 weeks on the top of the Billboard HOT 100 singles chart in 2005, We Belong Together. The only single by an Idol finalist to rank along side Mariah on this chart is the Season One Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, with her 2005 mega hit Since U Been Gone coming in at #47 for the decade.

Billboard's HOT 100 Artists of the Decade List ranks artists and takes into consideration all of the songs that have charted from 2000-2009. On this chart, Usher comes in at #1 and once again the highest ranking Miss American Idol Finalist is Season One winner Kelly Clarkson coming in at #9 for the decade. Other Miss American Idol finalists making this chart are The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four Winner Carrie Underwood at #65, Season Five 3rd runner up Chris Daughtry at #87, and Season Six Winner Jordin Sparks at #91.

When it comes to albums, the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood ended up having the #1 Country Album of the ENTIRE DECADE with her debut release, Some Hearts. This hit-filled, multi-platinum album ends up at #14 on the comprehensive list of top albums of the decade. Also on the top comprehensive albums of the decade list at #29 is the Grammy winning pop album Breakaway from Season One winner Kelly Clarkson. The debut album from Chris Daughtry lands at #48 and the second album from Carrie Underwood, Carnival Ride comes in at #132 for the decade. (Carnival Ride is #26 on the list of Top Country Albums of the decade.) Rounding out the top albums for the decade, we find the debut album, Measure of a Man, from Season Two Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, Clay Aiken, at #170.

On the Top Albums Artists list which takes into consideration all of the albums that have charted from 2000-2009 Billboard places the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood at #42. Season One Winner Kelly Clarkson is at #50, Season Five 3rd Runner Up Chris Daughtry is at #99 and Season Two 1st Runner Up Clay Aiken is at #120.

What an impressive record of success on the Billboard charts!

Carrie Underwood
Kelly Clarkson
Chris Daughtry
Clay Aiken
Jordin Sparks

2009 Year End Charts

The #1 album on the Billboard charts for all of 2009 is Fearless by Taylor Swift. None of the Miss American Idol finalists managed to get into the top 10 on the year end albums chart, but it's somewhat of a surprise to see who got closest...

Coming in all the way up at #13 is the debut album from Season Seven Miss American Idol winner, David Cook! Who would have thought that his album that failed to generate any hit singles would end up selling this well and staying on the chart for so many weeks?

Further down at #33 for the year is the fun and hit packed release by Season One Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, All I Ever Wanted. The second album by Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd Runner Up Chris Daughtry, Leave This Town, lands at #37 while the debut from Season Seven Miss American Idol 1st Runner Up, David Archuleta, ends up at #59 for the year.

The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner, Carrie Underwood, places two albums on the year end chart with Carnival Ride still going strong at #60 and her latest release, Play On, coming in at #73 after only a few weeks on the chart during the year.

Rounding out the top 200 albums of 2009, we find Jennifer Hudson's album at #103, Chris Daughtry's first album sticking around at #130, and the album with the super fun hit single, The Best Days of Your Life, Kellie Pickler coming in at #152.

The Top 5 singles for 2009 are only by three artists! The Black Eyed Peas come in at #1 with Boom Boom Pow, Lady Gaga takes both #2 and #3 with Poker Face and Just Dance and then the Black Eyed Peas return at #4 with I Gotta Feeling. Taylor Swift manages to squeeze in at #5 with Love Story.

The American Idol finalist who makes the highest showing on the year end singles chart is Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson at #23 with her #1 smash My Life Would Suck Without You.

Also landing in the top 100 songs of the year is Season Six Miss American Idol winner Jordin Sparks at #57 with Battlefield, Chris Daughtry at #63 with No Surprise and then Kelly Clarkson comes back at #91 and #95 with her follow up singles, I Do Not Hook Up and Already Gone.

With all of this Miss American Idol success on the albums and singles charts, they also did very well on the Billboard 2009 Top Artists of the Year chart: #14 - Kelly Clarkson, #33 - David Cook, #35 - Carrie Underwood and #37 - Daughtry.

Hitting the BULLSEYE!

Look at the last page of this week's Entertainment Weekly with the Best of the Decade on the cover. You will see that right in the middle of the page it reads:

27 million albums sold, 7 Grammys and 1 Oscar: Our life would suck without them.

And pictured above this caption is Season Five Miss American Idol 3rd runner up Chris Daughtry, Season Three finalist Jennifer Hudson, Season One Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson and front and center, of course, is the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season Four winner Carrie Underwood.

Incidentally, of the 7 Grammys, one of them went to Jennifer Hudson, two were won by Kelly Clarkson and the remaining four were all awarded to Carrie Underwood including the 2006 Grammy for Best New Artist.

American Music Awards 2009

Overall the 2009 American Music Awards was quite a lot of musical entertainment. There were hot performances by the biggest hitmakers of the year including Lady Gaga and the Black-Eyed Peas.

Miss American Idol Season Five 3rd runner up Chris Daughtry performed, but he ended up going home empty handed. Even the Supreme Miss American Idol Season Four winner Carrie Underwood, who provided one of the best performances of the night of her current smash hit Cowboy Casanova, had to allow the reigning artist of the year, Taylor Swift, to accept the award for favorite Country Female Vocalist. After Carrie has won it for the past three years, it's acceptable for her to pass the torch to the young woman who would be nothing if she hadn't blazed the trail for her in the first place. One of these days it would be nice if Taylor thanked Carrie when she's up there accepting an award for paving the way and making country music popular with young people again.

Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson was also on stage performing her latest hit, but they truly saved the best for last when Season Eight Miss American Idol 1st runner up, Adam Lambert gave the first live performance ever of his new single For Your Entertainment. He gave us all the glam we've come to expect from him with his energetic and showstopping over the top vocal extravaganza. His new album is in stores tomorrow. The perfect holiday gift!!!

Season Eight Miss American Idol winner Kris Allen did not perform, but he was there to present an award. His new album hit stores last week, so we'll see how many copies it sold and where it's gonna land on the charts very soon.

Carrie Underwood back at #1

Carrie Underwood's "Play On" bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, shifting 318,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It's the country star and former "American Idol" champ's second album to top the Billboard 200, after her sophomore set "Carnival Ride" bowed in the penthouse with 527,000 in 2007. Underwood's debut effort, "Some Hearts," started at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 and at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with 315,000.

"Play On's" 318,000 sum is also the largest sales week for an album by a woman in 2009.

This debut at #1 arrives on the same day that the Season Four Miss American Idol winner co-hosts the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley. She performed her smash hit Cowboy Casanova which has been the #1 video on CMT's Top 20 countdown for three weeks now.

The big winner at the CMA's turned out to be the young woman who has been following in Carrie's footsteps all year. 19 year old Taylor Swift ended up winning the awards for Female Vocalist of the Year as well as Entertainer of the Year. Just like Carrie did earlier this year at the ACM's, Taylor ended up snagging the biggest prize of the night from the old boys club.

The next big award show of the season will be the American Music Awards Sun. Nov. 22nd. Once again Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry are the only Miss American Idol finalists who managed to get any nominations. Neither of last years top two, David Cook or David Archuleta, have made a ripple in the music awards season so far. The glaring omission from the 2009 American Music Awards nominations is Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. She had a huge #1 smash early in the year with My Life Would Suck Without You and it is certainly deserving of recognition.

This year's top two, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, are right at the beginning of their opportunity for ongoing success in the music world with new albums coming out this month. We'll just have to wait and see what happens....

DIVA Idols

The action on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart has all been downward lately. Season 5 Miss American Idol 3rd runner up Chris Daughtry is making the best showing this week as he's hanging on in the top 10 at #9 with his latest release, Leave This Town.

This aren't looking so well for the latest release from Season 6 Miss American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks. After only five weeks on the chart she has fallen all the way down to #63 with Battlefield. Season 1 Miss American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, is at #80 with her former #1 album All I Ever Wanted, but that's not so bad after 24 weeks on the chart.

Over on the Billboard HOT 100 Singles chart, Jordin is still putting in the best showing of the bunch with her single, Battlefield, logging in at #16. Turns out that her peak position with this track so far has been #10 a few weeks ago.

Chris Daughtry had to settle for peaking at #15 with his single, No Surprise, but this week it is slipping down to #23. Kelly Clarkson's 3rd single from All I Ever Wanted, Already Gone, is taking a very slow climb up the chart resting at #65 this week. Another Idol represented on the Billboard HOT 100 this week is Season 7 Miss American Idol winner, David Cook. His single, Come Back To Me only managed to peak at #63 and this week it has dropped down to #80.

My favorite Idol song still making a splash is from Season 5 finalist, Kellie Pickler, whose incredibly fun and catchy Best Days Of Your Life is just behind David Cook at #81.

I have to strongly recommend checking out the latest from Jordin Sparks and Kellie Pickler. These are both great representations of the finest in pop music!

While the action on the charts isn't the most stellar news, the VH1 Divas concert is shaping up to be quite the American Idol extravaganza. Kelly Clarkson is already announced as the headlining diva, but she will now be sharing the spotlight with both Jordin Sparks and Paula Abdul!!!

Paula may have been dropped as a judge on the next season of Idol, but VH1 Divas has asked her to be the host of this year's concert. It's turning out to be a CAN'T MISS night of Idol DIVA entertainment! Circle September 17th on your calendar and set the TiVo to record this show you will surely be watching again and again.
