The Results - J-Lo

From 1999 to 2003 Jennifer Lopez managed to hit #1 four times with these recordings: If You Had My Love, I'm Real, Ain't It Funny and All I Have. These were all pop/R&B hits with rap collaborations. What's funny is that the folks at American Idol thought that J-Lo would be able to mentor the finalists regarding la musica latina even though she's never had a latin hit. For the first time in her career Jennifer has released a Spanish-language album just last week so apparently she's here this week to establish her credibility as a Latin artist.

Unlike J-Lo, Enrique Iglesias has had numerous latin hits and latin-flavored pop hits including Bailamos, that spent 2 weeks at #1 in 1999. All 8 finalists gathered on stage to perform esta cancion, but for the most part, they still haven't mastered this style of music. With Blake being the only contestant with any rhythm to speak of, the group as a whole looked rather stiff and clumsy as they attempted to sing a song about dancing.

With a full hour to fill there was plenty of time for more performances including Akon and his song that is currently #1 for it's second week, Don't Matter. Akon was actually on the results show a couple of weeks ago when he performed Sweet Escape with Gwen Stefani. As a result of that high profile performance the song leaped all the way back up to #2 on the charts. So 2007 is turning out to be the year of Akon as he is holding the #1 and #2 positions on the charts.

Finally it came time for the results. Once again, Phil was called center stage in the bottom three. LaKisha, Jordin and Melinda were all safe. Haley was the first to join Phil center stage. Blake was also safe leaving Sanjaya and Chris to potentially be one of the lowest vote getters. Turns out the bottom three is Phil, Haley and Chris. But he wasn't there for long as Chris was immediately informed that he can go back to safety.

Phil and Haley had to wait while Jennifer Lopez performed her latest single, Que Hiciste. What can I say? It was a blatant attempt at Latina credibility. Hopefully this promotional appearance will do its job and ignite some life into this energetic spanish language dance song. One thing is for sure, it won't happen based on her vocal abilities alone.

Once again, Phil has taken up space in the bottom three and once again he has survived to come back for another week. Although she is sweet, sincere and genuine, Haley Scarnato just didn't have enough to garner any more votes. She performed Turn The Beat Around one more time with all the enthusiasm and energy we have come to expect.

This week I correctly predicted all three of the bottom three. Thankfully there were none of the surprises that I feared, but LaKisha and Melinda will hopefully not become complacent. The only thing I couldn't predict correctly was how many lives Phil Stacey has. Week after week he yawns his way through the show and the people still keep voting for him. Will being in the final 7 continue his lucky streak?
