The Top 25 is going to get chopped down to only 13 finalists moving forward in the competition.
Based on the votes from America, this is the Top 10:
Phillip Phillips
Jessica Sanchez
Holly Cavanagh
Joshua Ledet
Heejun Han
Shannon Magone
Skylar Laine
Elise Testone
Colton Dixon
Jermaine Jones
In my opinion, it's a very mixed bag. The best thing is that America got it right by voting for Jessica Sanchez to be moving forward. She is the clear front-runner. It is also very nice to see Jessica joined by Holly, Skylar, Elise, Joshua and Colton. All of these contestants have very good voices combined with fresh, entertaining and fun personalities.
The others, though, are going to have to work very hard to win me over into thinking they belong here still. Heejun should have never even made the Top 24, so I can't figure out at all why people are voting for him. He comes off as rude, insincere, offensive and an all around unpleasant jerk. As for Phillip, Shannon, and Jermaine: they are all very over-rated by the judges. The judges gush over them no matter what they do and it feels like they are force feeding them onto the viewers. The judges can keep repeating that they are the best things ever, but I still haven't seen it from these finalists yet.
So with three more positions to fill the judges asked six of the remaining finalists to sing for their lives!
The first to get another chance was Jen Hirsh who totally squandered this opportunity by serving up a bland and boring vocal performance of a forgettable song.
The next was Jeremy Rosado who served up an emotional rollercoaster rendition of the Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood's I Know You Won't. While there's no way anyone will ever be able to match her exception vocal performance, Jeremy tugged on our heartstrings and proved himself once again as the most genuinely likeable young man the Idol stage has ever seen. He hit some of the big notes very well and ended the song in tears just like he surely affected many of the fans in the audience.
For some reason the judges wanted to hear Brielle Von Hugel sing again and she gave her best effort with Adele's recent #1 smash Someone Like You. The few glimmers of good singing were far out numbered by the not so great stuff that we never want to see or hear again.
There is no confusion at all with understanding why the judges next selected Deandre Brackensick to sing for his life. He has a clear and pure vocal range that is effortlessly impressive. He is able to easily transition to every note on the scale unlike anyone else in the competition. He applied his skills and talents to Georgia On My Mind and it was simply musical and vocal perfection.
There is also no confusion regarding the fact that Erika Van Pelt was asked to step back into the ring. She poured every ounce of her heart and soul into her powerful performance of Edge of Glory that Lady Gaga took to the top 10 last year. She is the genuine real deal and it comes through every time the audience is blessed with hearing her sing.
The final opportunity was given to Reed Grimm. He performed Use Me that Bill Withers took to #2 in 1972. While he may not have a future as a recording star, this energetic young man is very talented and dynamic on stage. He has a great sense of showmanship and he's a lot of fun to watch.
I am happy to report that the final three slots were all given to very worthy contestants:
Erika Van Pelt
Jeremy Rosado
Deandre Brackensick
Unfortunately there wasn't room for Creighton Fraker to be included on the Miss American Idol stage one more time and that is a real shame. He is clearly a very talented young man and I wish him the best in his future endeavors.

The Top 10 sing R&B Soul
Hit making R&B superstar, Usher, shared his musical words of wisdom with the top 10 finalists this week.
Siobhan Magnus did her best to work her magic on Chaka Khan's Through The Fire. Her vocals were just as strong as usual, but there was a noticeable difference in her confidence. It looks like even the most talented finalists get worried about performing first.
Casey James brought his usual good guy persona to Sam & Dave's Hold On! I'm A Comin' that hit #21 in 1966. It looks like Casey is going to do pretty much the same thing every week. It appears he has no interest in growing as an artist.
Michael Lynche introduced the audience to the India Arie track Ready For Love. It was sweet and sensitive to the point of being quite boring, but the vocals were clear and strong. People may be interested in hearing this song again...
Didi Benami stood center stage in a glittery gown to perform Jimmy Ruffin's What Becomes of the Brokenhearted that hit #7 in 1966. She looked quite beautiful clearly showing that she has no interest in being pigeonholed in one musical category. She wants to take risks and try different things and she doesn't care what people think. Her voice is strong and she showed it off well tonight.
Tim Urban actually hit some good notes in his performance of Anita Baker's #8 hit from 1986, Sweet Love. So in this case, in combination with his adorable good looks there are sure to be numerous fans who are very pleased out there.
Andrew Garcia is so stuck in trying to recreate his past glory that he thought sucking the life out of Chris Brown's fun dance floor jam Forever that peaked at #2 in 2008 would win us over. His drippy acoustic version completely fell flat with weak vocals and no personality.
Katie Stevens tried to keep herself out of the bottom three this week by taking on Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools that hit #2 in 1967. She looked cute, fresh and young and sounded pretty good, but she still hasn't really lived up to her potential yet.
Lee Dewyze showed some unexpected vocal range with his version of the 1971 #3 hit Treat Her Like A Lady by the Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose. Now keep in my that there was only some vocal range, most of it was still his tired old generic rock guy rasping. Being merely good should not pass for something earth shattering...
Crystal Bowersox showed everyone what it means to keep growing as an artist with her fantastic version of the classic #1 smash by Gladys Knight and the Pips from 1973, Midnight Train To Georgia. She sat at the piano instead of using her guitar and her voice was even better than usual. She looked fabulous in her stilettos as well!
Aaron Kelly can sing Bill Withers #3 hit from 1971 Ain't No Sunshine all he wants, but he's still a pixie little kid trying to be taken seriously. His voice simply isn't good enough to overcome his shortcomings.
My prediction for the bottom three this week is Tim Urban, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly. This week should finally be the time when Andrew Garcia goes home.

The top 10 girls try again to impress
Some of the boys managed to step up and improve from last week so let's see if any of the girls can make an exciting effort to save themselves...
Credence Clearwater Revival never had a hit with Long As I Can See The Light, but Crystal Bowersox could change that if she released her version. She is able to take the stage like a true artist and blow the audience away with her powerful vocals and talent.
Miley Cyrus is a teenager who hit #6 last year with The Climb so another teen Haeley Vaughn gave this song her best effort. In my opinion Haeley was able to do it better than Miley. She has a very nice voice and bubbly personality that makes her fun to watch.
Sixpence None The Richer peaked at #2 in 1999 with Kiss Me and Lacey Brown hoped that this song would endear the audience to her. While it should have been a perfect match for her free spirited style it was just drab.
Corinne Bailey Rae got critical acclaim in 2006 when she released Put Your Records On, but this was totally the wrong song to showcase Katie Stevens at her best. It's clear that there are some powerful pipes in Katie but she selected this messy song that allowed her to barely use any of them.
Bill Withers had a #1 smash in 1972 with Lean On Me and Didi Benami did her best to make it more soulful than folksy. The fact is, though, that everything Didi does is going to come off as a simple folk song.
Creed hit the #1 position in 2000 with their power ballad With Arms Wide Open and Michelle Delamor hoped she would be able to make this song her own. Very disappointingly, her vocals were totally off in her painful effort. We were all glad when it was finally over.
Sam Cooke was able to get A Change Is Gonna Come up to #31 in 1965 and Lilly Scott has the passion to possibly take her version even higher. She had a lot of confidence as she performed this song with her very unique personal style.
Coldplay recorded The Scientist on their 2002 album A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Katelyn Epperly tried to show a different side of herself with this performance. She successfully presented an artist who can play piano and sing with strong vocals, even though the song was very slow and boring.
Season One Miss American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson had numerous hits off her blockbuster album Breakaway including Walk Away. Paige Miles did a great job with this catchy pop rock song, but she would do even better with a song with more power notes.
Aretha Franklin hit #7 with her very fun song Think in 1968 and Siobhan Magnus was actually able to take on the Queen of Soul with her version. She still needs to work on deciding what kind of stage presence she has, but she hits the big notes very well.
Crystal is the only girl who stood out as having any real ability to be a entertaining performer and recording artist. While some of the others may have reasonably good voices, they do not have the stage presence yet to know how to show it off best. Any of them could be going home, but my prediction is that Lacey Brown and Michelle Delamor have put in their final performance.

The Season 8 Finals!
I knew from the beginning that Adam Lambert would be here in the Season 8 American Idol finals, but Kris Allen has risen above all the others to surprise us and take the place right next to him. They are going to sing three songs each tonight to win our votes...
The first selection from Adam was his rendition of the Tears For Fears song Mad World that he did earlier in the competition. This time it was even bigger and better than before. We were treated to another grand entrance down a dramatic staircase and the stage was covered with fog. He wore an even more over the top glam rock, goth ensemble and his vocals were just has spectacular as we have come to expect.
Kris is going to have to step up to the challenge of following the Adam Extravaganza all night and for this first round he decided to resurrect his performance of Bill Wither's Ain't No Sunshine. He sat at the piano and brought his subtle style to this wonderful song. While his vocals have never been his stand-out feature, he still can entertain in a way that is appealing to the mainstream. He re-created this song just enough making sure not to offend anyone.
The second round features songs selected by the American Idol creator, Simon Fuller. For Adam the choice was Sam Cooke's 1965 hit A Change Is Gonna Come. This song allowed Adam to interpret a different kind of song than usual: the social anthem. He once again demonstrated that he can elevate a song to a new and exciting place with his exceptional vocal skills. He seriously commands the stage and provides pure energy and entertainment.
Marvin Gaye had his own social anthem with What's Going On that peaked at #2 in 1971. Kris Allen decided to use his acoustic guitar this time around and delivered his watered down version of the song. With his pretty face and light vocals the vibe at this protest/demonstration was very laid back.
And now the time has come to debut the inspirational first single for the American Idol winner. This year the song is called No Boundaries and it's a message that Adam Lambert has exemplified every week. He brought his complete originality to what could have been something very sappy. Instead, he made it so much more than inspirational. It was a driving force of immediacy and motivation!
Kris Allen had to then take on the same song, No Boundaries, but there was definitely a problem. Without his piano or guitar he only had his vocals to take on stage with him and that left him with one huge boundary. His vocals aren't nearly impressive enough to inject the necessary inspiration into the lyrics.
One of these young men is being sent Home Sweet Home tomorrow night while the other will be crowned the Season 8 Miss American Idol. In order to provide an example of the standard of excellence that has been set, The Supreme Miss American Idol, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, graced the stage to demonstrate what Adam or Kris must live up to. She performed her stellar rendition of Motley Crue's power ballad to close out this fun night of musical entertainment.
The prediction for who will get that crown tomorrow night is easy. It completely belongs to Adam Lambert. He has the impressive vocal range and totally fearless stage presence to rise up to the standard Carrie built. Kris is very good, but safe. He breaks no barriers and pushes no envelopes. The American Idol winner should do all that and more and Adam Lambert far exceeds expectations.
On an editorial note...
Turns out I will not be home to watch the show live tomorrow night and see the glitter shower down on the winner. My full review of the performances will, therefore, be posted late.

The Top 9 sing the Top itunes downloads
The top 9 finalists had the chance to visit with Ryan in the radio studio this week as he counted down the Top 40 hits of the week. The top 40 is tabulated by combining the songs with the most radio airplay with the songs with the most sales into one comprehensive chart. Sales and Airplay is what it's all about in the music business and that's what these finalists hope to achieve. Here's how they sound trying to sing the songs that are currently the top selling downloads at itunes:
Usher hit the top 10 in 2006 with Caught Up from his top selling multi-platinum album, Confessions. Anoop Desai wants so much to be in the same league as Usher, but this performance showed very clearly that he is not. While he has demonstrated his ability to sing some nice and soulful vocals, his stage presence is simply not up to par.
I'm not really sure how Bob Marley's Turn Your Lights Down Low qualified as a top download, but Meagan Joy performed it somehow. It was more of the same bouncy quirky essence that she delivers every week. If you are a fan you will like it, but if not, you are ready to see her go.
Rascal Flatts had a huge #1 Country Hit in 2006 with What Hurts The Most. Danny Gokey has already shown us that his limited vocals are perfect for butchering a Carrie Underwood song and tonight he has done the same to Rascal Flatts. Every note was strained, weak and so much worse than the original.
It was 1995 when No Doubt dominated the airwaves with Don't Speak. Alison Iraheta made her big pink hair even bigger as she played her guitar in accompaniment to her rocking vocals. She did a great job adding her raspy edge to this great song. Very well done.
In 1978 Billy Joel won the Grammy for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Just The Way You Are after it peaked at #3 on the Billboard HOT 100. (I'm really not understanding the theme this week) Scott MacIntyre sounded great with this piano anthem. His vocals were very strong and he continued with his signature warmth and sincerity. Last week he allowed his people to dress him in pink pants and tonight he let them give him a big moussed up 80's hairstyle. It's kinda funny, but he needs no gimmick to shine - his genuine talent is all he needs.
You Found Me by The Fray is currently #23 on the itunes Top Songs chart. Matt Giraud seems, like me, to have taken a more literal interpretation of this week's theme as he played his piano in the middle of the audience and performed this hit. This week he didn't make a fool of himself as much as he did last week, but with only his vocals to consider, they just weren't that good. Boring and bland is all that can be said.
In 2002 Celine Dion released I Surrender on her album A New Day Has Come. In addition to showing us a new hair style every week, Lil Rounds makes a genuine effort to give us something different every week. Tonight it was a straight up adult contemporary power ballad. Her vocals are far superior to most of the other finalists, but it would have been nice if she had served us a current hot selling hip hop song. We know she can do it, but she's not illustrating it every week. I don't ever want to hear her sing Celine Dion again.
Wild Cherry became a one hit wonder after spending three weeks at #1 in 1976 with Play That Funky Music. Adam Lambert decided to try and take this classic oldie and make it sound current and fresh. Every week he has shown us that he is not going to play it safe and tonight this rendition was captivating and energizing. He leaves us looking forward to what unexpected and exciting thing he's going to do next week.
Bill Withers peaked at #3 in 1971 with Ain't No Sunshine. Kris Allen put down the guitar, sat at the piano and showed that he's so much more than a pretty face. This completely different arrangement would make a video that is worth both watching and listening to. An excellent presentation.
So this Top itunes downloads theme ended up being an unfocused sloppy mess, but there were still some good performances that came out of it. My top five continues to be Adam Lambert, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta. The others are simply failing to impress. While Danny Gokey is an over-rated tragedy on stage I'm going to stop predicting that he will end up in the bottom three. That leaves my prediction being Anoop Desai, Meagan Joy and Matt Giraud. I think Anoop will be going home.
